Jacob's Dream

“He had a dream in which he saw a ladder resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” (Genesis 28:12)

“For He gives to His beloved even in their sleep,” we read in Psalm 127. Dreams hold a special place in our lives. Some dreams fill us with joy and brighten our days, while others leave us troubled and burdened even after we awake. In our dreams, our deepest longings may seem to come true, and we may even meet loved ones whom we have already lost.
Jacob also had a remarkable dream. He was traveling from Beersheba toward Haran. Along the way he stopped to rest near Bethel. He lay down on the bare ground, placing his head on a stone. In his dream he saw a ladder reaching up to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending on it, and he heard the Lord's promise. When he awoke, he was filled with holy reverence. He realized that he had encountered the presence of God. He said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” (Genesis 28:16) Jacob took the stone on which he had rested his head, set it up as a memorial pillar, poured oil on it, and named the place Bethel, meaning “House of God.” He also made a vow: if the Lord would be with him, watch over him on his journey, and bring him back home in peace, then the Lord would be his God, and he would give Him a tenth of everything he possessed.
Jacob's dream was no coincidence. He was fleeing from danger, facing an uncertain future with fear in his heart. In that difficult moment, God made it clear to him that he was not alone. The ladder proclaimed that there is a living connection between heaven and earth and that God is present in the lives of His people.
Dear Reader, any one of us may one day find ourselves in circumstances similar to Jacob's. In a single moment, life can become uncertain and difficult. We may find ourselves fleeing from hatred toward love, from anger toward forgiveness. If you feel alone, or if your life seems to have sunk into deep darkness, remember Jacob's story. God is still with us today. He opens the way to Himself and never abandons us in the midst of our struggles. Trust in Him, for He faithfully leads all who turn to Him. Amen.
